Poppies at Argenteuil, 1873Original: oil on canvas, 19 5/8 x 25 5/8" 100% satisfaction guarantee. Enchanted with flowers, Monet captured Impressionism's purest expression in paintings like this. Here poppies are registered instantaneously in their natural setting as they grow in hollows near Argenteuil. |
The woman and child in the foreground are Monet's first wife, Camille and their six-year-old son, Jean. Some scholars speculate that the pair in the background may also be Camille and Jean. In its delicately brushed and thinly painted tones, Poppies at Argenteuil is different from many works of Monet's Argenteuil period. The lilting rhythm and soft brushing of the figures is tender, but the enlarged scarlet patches that Monet selected from the detail of the field are the keynotes of the work. |
