Monet was enchanted by these poplars on the Epte River near Giverny. After he had begun painting them, he heard they were going to be cut and sold at auction. He frantically contacted the mayor in order to delay the sale, without success. He then contacted the most likely bidder and told him he would reimburse him whatever amount he paid over the price he had planned to bid, as long as he would keep on bidding. While the bidding continued, the trees were left in place until Monet had finished painting them.

Monet once wrote to a friend, "We're having marvelous weather and I wish I could send you a little of the sunshine. I am slaving away on six paintings a day. I'm giving myself a hard time over it as I haven't yet managed to capture the colour of this landscape, there are moments when I'm appalled at the colours I'm having to use, I'm afraid what I'm doing is just dreadful and yet I really am understating it; the light is simply terrifying."
