Claude Monet created a water garden at his home in Giverny which was to inspire his greatest work. He spent twenty-seven years of his life painting the water lilies and his water garden, trying to capture the inexpressible display of light, clouds and reflections.

Monet planted his garden like a pictorial composition, distributing his flowers as if from a palette. In his water garden, Monet created "the most beautiful of landscapes" because he had "put in some water so that the sky could be reflected in it, along with the plants, some afloat, - the red, pink, yellow and white water lilies."
